Outlaws
QA Tester/Associate Level Designer - Object Placement Specialist - LUCASARTS
Outlaws was my first real job in the video games industry. I started in QA as as tester on Outlaws and worked on that project for about 6 months. In that time, I cultivated some friendships with the level designers (most of whom I'm still close friends with) and was invited to take a level design test to join the team on the Outlaws expansion pack.
Obviously, I got the job and the rest is history.
Duties
Responsible for placing pickup objects throughout the game.
Tuned pickup values to ensure continuity of gameplay experience.
I was primarily an "Object Placement Specialist" and my job was to place all of the enemies, powerups, and other objects in the world. Level designers, back then (at least in Lucasarts) did not place their own enemies or gameplay items. Scripting was pretty minimal as far as enemy placement was concerned.
To this day, I still get comments about how cool people thought Outlaws was. Definitely one of my favorite projects that I had the privilege of working on.
Some gameplay from the first mission.
And I just had to add this... the excellent intro cinematic. The old Lucasarts was an awesome place to work!
